Trading Policy

Interesting in trading books? Then you’re invited to Bookshelf and Cover to Cover to put the books you’ve already read towards new ones. Both Bookshelf and Cover to Cover trade books under a specific policy. These policies have been listed below, to help new customers familiarize themselves with the types of books we accept and what categories they can be traded towards.

 

Please note: Bookshelf and Cover to Cover have separate trading policies. Although the basic trading rules are the same, there are specific rules for each store. Both policies are listed below. Please make sure you are reading the correct policy before bringing in books or contacting either store.

Text Box: Overview

The Bookshelf trades books, audio books, Archie digests and comics. If you are interested in trading comics, please call us first.  

Trades are welcome at any time, every day except for Sundays and holidays. Please do not bring trades on Sunday. 

Trades are offered within categories. Audio books can only be traded toward other audio books, Archie digests toward Archie digests, etc. Book trading is also done within categories. Please see below. 

Books are traded for books at 60% of what will sell the books for. There is no consignment.

If you bring in books and do not use all your trade, you may leave a credit at Bookshelf. Please keep in mind that credits are only good for three months unless they are in use. If you don not plan on using your credit within three months of your visit, please only bring in the amount of books you think you might use that day. 

Rules

We do not accept garage sale leftovers, library discards, or other stores non-returnable. Bookshelf also does not take books that are water damaged, soiled or have loose pages. Bookshelf reserves the right to refuse any book at any time.

Important! GST is charged on all trades and is not taken off a credit amount; it must be paid in cash. There are no non-monetary transactions at Bookshelf. 

Trade Categories

Children’s books: traded for other Childrens’ books only.

Fiction trade: General, historical and thriller novels are included under fiction and can only be traded towards other general, historical and thriller novels. War fiction in fiction trade.

Credit trade: given for science-fiction/fantasy, mystery, horror, western, non-fiction (war, true crime, biographies) and literature books. Can be used toward any book excluding new books.    

New book trade: “New books” are paperbacks first published in the past six months. This category does not include reprints, 3-in-1s, westerns, Harlequin/Silhouette romances, gothic/regency or action-adventure books. 

Romances: traded 2 for 1 toward other romances. These include Silhouette, Love Swept, Harlequin American, Harlequin Temptations, etc. we are only taking romances first published in the last 3 years unless they contain a Cover to Cover store stamp.

Harlequin Superromances: traded 2 for 1 towards other Superromances exclusively.  

Harlequins: This category includes Harlequin Romance and Harlequin Presents. These are traded 2 for 1 towards other Harlequins exclusively. 

Hardcover/Trade paperback: Trade paperbacks are oversized paperback books. These can only be traded towards other trade paperbacks. We reserve the right to place restrictions on the trading of trade paperbacks at any time. 

Hardcover/Trade paperback fiction: Hardcover/trade paperback fiction can only be traded toward other hardcover/trade paperback fiction.   

Used Archie digest & comics: are cash or other used Archie digest and comic trade only.

Keeping a Credit

If you bring in books for trade and do not use all your trade that day, you can keep a credit with Bookshelf. 

Credits can be saved for up to three months. Every time you use your saved credit it is renewed for another 3 months. If your credit is not used at all during the 3 month period it becomes void and is destroyed.

We do not hold credits with a value lower than $1.00 or higher than $100.00 (total).

Cover to Cover accepts books with an original Canadian cover price of $5.50 or higher. Exceptions are made in Classics, Science Fiction/Fantasy, War, Non-fiction and Mysteries at our discretion.

Trade paperback: Trade paperbacks are oversized paperback books. While we do not deal in hardcovers, we do carry trade paperbacks. These can only be traded towards other trade paperbacks. We reserve the right to place restrictions on the trading of trade paperbacks at any time.
